A Residential Treatment Center for Adolescent Males with Behavioral and Emotional Disorders
Therapy Process
1. Initial orientation to the unit. Rules, regulations, and program concepts are explained to the resident. Family meets with assigned primary therapist who explains every aspect of the program. The first family therapy session time and parent training sessions are established.
2. Physical completed by the physician. Dental assessment, hearing assessment, and visual acuity assessment are completed by nursing staff.
3. A battery of psychometric tests is administered including projective techniques, tests of intellectual functioning, and educational levels. Other assessments include: drug usage assessment, dietary assessment, recreational/vocational assessment, and an assessment of all previous data provided concerning the resident.
4. A psychiatric assessment is completed by the staff psychiatrist.
5. A treatment plan is developed utilizing input from all professional staff, the resident, and his family. This document is signed by all professional staff, the resident, and his family so that everyone knows the goals and objectives of treatment, how they will be achieved and how they will be measured.
6. The resident keeps a daily journal of progress, achievements, problems, feelings, and school performance which is discussed in the weekly sessions.
7. The resident attends school five hours a day on weekdays and three hours a day on weekends.
8. The resident has a minimum of three group sessions per week and two individual sessions per week.
9. The resident receives life-skills training and decision-making training.
10. There is a bi-weekly staffing for each resident to determine progress in the program and any needed changes in the treatment regimen. The resident and his parents are an integral part of the process and provide input into changes and concepts of achievement.
11. Family therapy sessions occur at least twice per month and increase in frequency as the resident nears discharge. A family contract for discharge is prepared.
